Understanding Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse is a pattern of controlling, coercive, or threatening behaviour that can occur in any relationship, regardless of age, gender, or background. It encompasses not only physical violence but also emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse. Survivors often experience feelings of fear, isolation, and diminished self-worth, making it difficult to seek help. Recognising the signs of domestic abuse is the first step towards safety and recovery. Support is available—no one should face abuse alone. By reaching out, individuals can access resources and compassionate guidance to rebuild their lives and restore their sense of security and self-confidence.
Psychotherapy for survivors of domestic abuse provides a confidential, supportive space to process trauma, rebuild self-esteem, and develop strategies for healing. As a skilled therapist, I use evidence-based approaches such as trauma-informed therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) to help individuals address the emotional and psychological impact of abuse, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress. Sessions are tailored to each survivor’s needs, focusing on safety, empowerment, and restoring a sense of autonomy. Therapy can be delivered one-to-one, or remotely, ensuring flexible support for those with busy lives or additional responsibilities. Above all, psychotherapy aims to help survivors regain confidence, break the cycle of abuse, and move forward towards a healthier, violence-free future.
